Good question! I just returned from a trip to trans-Pecos Texas, and before and after camping near Terlingua, I stopped by Marfa.
We stayed at the Riata Inn, the cheapest motel/hotel in town (of three). It was $66.67 for two. I asked about that supposed highway crew booking and the lady at the desk got out her book and said that nobody had any reservations for the weekend in question (June 8-10). Here is the number and a web site: 432-729-3800 - http://www.riatainn.com/
I am working on getting some more possibilities for lodging (houses to share). Meanwhile, the best hotel in town is El Paisano: 866-729-3669 http://www.hotelpaisano.com/ very nice, significant architecture, and not all that much more pricy ($99-210/night per room). We may get a room or two there, to use as a hospitality suite.
There is another hotel/motel, The Thunderbird. It looked overpriced to me from the outside, but I did not go inside. You can google that.
Also, I want people to know about an RV park I visited where you can put up a tent for $8/night, with showers. It is just a couple of blocks south of the AmVets meeting hall. I'll post contact info for that soon.
See you in Marfa!
